We uphold the highest standards of honesty and ethical practices.
We take responsibility for our actions and their outcomes.
We embrace diversity and strive to include all voices in our initiatives.
We foster transparency in all our operations and communications.
We prioritize the needs and aspirations of the communities we serve.
IWGI was founded in 2019 with a mission to advocate for the fundamental rights and freedoms of indigenous women and girls in Baringo, Turkana, Elgeyo Marakwet, and other parts of Kenya. The organization comprises pastoralist communities such as the Maasai, Samburu, Rendile, Pokot, Turkana, Ilchamus, Borana, Gabra, Teso, Karamojong, Oromos, Endorois, Nyangatom, Toposa, and Jie; fisher folks like Elmolo and Desenach; and hunter-gatherer communities including Ogiek, Sengwer, Sanya, Yaaku, Waata, and IK.
IWGI seeks recognition, protection, and transformation for these communities from county and national governments, as well as the international community. The organization is a member of the Indigenous Women Council, the East and Southern Africa Pastoralist Network, the Minority and Indigenous Peoples Working at the Universal Periodic Review team, and the Climate Change Working Group in Kenya. Our goal is to amplify the voices of women and girls in Baringo and beyond, ensuring their rights are protected and their voices heard in decision-making processes.
